Phalaenopsis gigantea
Phalaenopsis gigantea is native to Borneo, named for its gigantic (gigantea) leaves that easily exceed 25"! The massive leaves are pendent, leathery, broadly rounded, pale silver green and shiny on both surfaces. The 2" cream-colored flowers are overlaid with red-brown spots and fragrant. Mature plants can produce hundreds of flowers on pendent, branching inflorescences reaching 15". Widely used in phalaenopsis hybrids. This unique species grows a little slower than some phalaenopsis, but is well worth the waiting! Plant leafspan: 2-3" in 2" pots.
